Homeowners' Frequently Asked Questions

If I choose to participate, how will my property be sampled?
Once we receive and process your access agreement, a professional soil program representative will call you to schedule a convenient time to visit your property.

In order to accurately determine the concentrations of various materials in your soil our team will take several samples from your front, back and side yard if it is large enough. Sample holes will be approximately three inches wide and taken at various depths.

In addition to the yard areas specified by the plan, while at your property, our team will also identify areas that may warrant special attention, such as children's play areas, swing sets or sandboxes. After the samples are collected, our professional field teams will carefully refill the sample holes

Do I have to remove any debris in my yard before you sample?
Probably not. This process is intended to be no more intrusive to residents than having your property visited by a mail carrier or meter reader. However, any large, obstructive object will have to be moved by the resident if a specific area underneath that object is to be sampled.

Can I specify areas of my yard that I do not want sampled?
Yes. We recommend, however, that you allow us to perform sampling in all appropriate areas of your property.

If Freeport-McMoRan plans to sample only a specific area of my yard, can I request that other areas also be sampled?
Yes. We will sample any area where you believe that smelter-related material may be located.

If I give you permission to sample my property and the results indicate the need for cleanup, can I still refuse to allow you to excavate?
Yes. Freeport-McMoRan respects your rights as a property owner, and you can choose not to participate at any time. If you decide to participate in the soil sampling program, you will need to sign an agreement giving us access to your property. This agreement, however, will only give us access to collect soil samples. If soil cleanup is warranted, you will need to sign a separate access agreement granting us your permission to perform the actual soil cleanup.
